Stabilizing milk collection by selling feed<\/h2>\n

Many Indian dairy farming households are small, keeping only a few head of cattle each. Milk yield depends on feed, and feed quality depends on farmers' cash flow. From the collector's perspective, milk volume and composition drop the moment a farmer switches to cheaper feed.<\/p>\n

Heritage Foods runs its own feed business. It sells feed to farmers and buys milk back from the same farmers. By being connected on both the selling and buying sides, it can control milk volume and composition to some extent. This is a technique commonly used by dairy companies in India.<\/p>\n

It collects milk from more than 300,000 farming households across 9 states and has the capacity to process 2.95 million liters a day at 18 plants. It handles more than 400 items, including milk, curd, ghee, paneer, and ice cream.<\/p>\n

This is a case of an established dairy company buying a small brand that started online and putting it onto its own chilled distribution network. The acquired side gains shelf space all at once, and the acquirer gains a product concept it didn't have. The deal size is small, but this pattern repeats across India's dairy industry.<\/p>\n

Points for Japanese companies<\/h2>\n

As a dairy company with a chilled distribution network across South and Central India, it's a candidate as a contract manufacturer for chilled foods. Its processing capacity of 2.95 million liters a day is large enough to be devoted to contract beverages or desserts as well.<\/p>\n

Since it has already shown a pattern of acquiring D2C brands into its lineup, it's easier to approach as a brand looking for a partner.
