Kwality Wall\u2019s (India) is the company that started on December 1, 2025 when Hindustan Unilever (HUL) separated its ice cream business. One share was allotted for each HUL share, and it listed on the BSE and NSE on February 16, 2026.<\/p>\n

Frozen and ambient-temperature goods are hard to run under one company<\/h2>\n

HUL has a system for distributing ambient-temperature consumer goods, such as soap, detergent, tea, and cosmetics, nationwide. Warehouses can stay at ambient temperature, and retailers only need a shelf. Because the products don't spoil, delivery frequency can also stay low.<\/p>\n

Ice cream is different. Both warehouses and trucks have to be kept frozen, and retailers need a freezer installed. A freezer costs money for the unit itself and for electricity, and stores rarely provide one on their own. It has become standard practice for the maker to lend the freezer and cover part of the electricity cost.<\/p>\n

In other words, even under the same label of \"consumer goods,\" the required equipment and investment logic are completely different. HUL judged it couldn't run this within the same structure as its ambient-temperature business and spun it off. The split lets investment decisions and pricing be made for ice cream on its own.<\/p>\n

How the spin-off and listing came about<\/h2>\n

It was demerged from HUL effective December 1, 2025, with a record date of December 5 that year, and one KWIL share was allotted for each HUL share. It listed on February 16, 2026, and the opening price was more than 20% below the adjusted share price. HUL booked a gain of \u20b94,611 crore on the demerger.<\/p>\n

It handles Unilever's global brands in India, such as Cornetto, Magnum, and Feast. The brands are strong, but dairy-based competitors such as Amul and Hatsun Agro control volume in the market.<\/p>\n

Points for Japanese companies<\/h2>\n

When selling frozen food or ice cream in India, the biggest barrier is who installs the freezer and who pays for the electricity. The fact that even a major player like HUL concluded it could not run the business in the same vehicle as its ambient business is the first thing anyone considering entry should take into account.<\/p>\n

There are two ways around this. One is to use the frozen section of a quick-commerce dark store and skip distributing freezers altogether \u2014 NIC Ice Creams has expanded to more than 100 cities this way. The other is to partner with an existing dairy or ice cream maker and get placed in their freezers.<\/p>\n
