From shelf-stable products to perishable ones<\/h2>\n

Biscuits keep for months at room temperature. They can be stocked even in stores without refrigeration and shipped to distant villages. The distribution network Britannia built over 130 years assumes this shelf stability.<\/p>\n

Adding dairy products (cheese, yogurt), bread, cakes, and croissants to that means needing a different distribution network built around refrigeration and short shelf life. Delivery frequency per store also rises. Expanding the product range comes with rebuilding logistics.<\/p>\n

Consolidated revenue for FY2026 (year ended March 2026) was \u20b919,152 crore, up from \u20b917,943 crore in FY2025. Biscuits and confectionery still make up the bulk of revenue.<\/p>\n

Bringing in an outside executive<\/h2>\n

Rakshit Hargave became CEO and MD effective December 15, 2025 (shareholder approval came in March 2026). He previously led Birla Opus, the paints business under the Aditya Birla Group, and has also worked at NIVEA India and Hindustan Unilever.<\/p>\n

Bringing in someone from outside food, from consumer goods, shows the emphasis is on reworking sales and logistics rather than product development. Both paints and household goods are categories where success comes down to how you run a nationwide retail network.<\/p>\n

Points for Japanese companies<\/h2>\n

For selling dairy or baking technology in India, Britannia is a realistic partner. It already has a nationwide retail network and is at the stage of trying to add refrigerated items onto it. This is a period when gaps in equipment or process tend to become clear.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, competing directly on biscuits is difficult. The company separates brands by price tier \u2014 Good Day, Tiger, Marie Gold \u2014 and has already secured shelf space.<\/p>\n

Before pursuing this, the first step is to check which cities the company can already reach with refrigerated distribution. Cold-chain networks in India vary widely by city, and that determines what kind of product can be handled.<\/p>\n
