A \u20b95 price point drives its distribution<\/h2>\n

The smallest pack of Parle-G sells for \u20b95 (about 9 yen). That price point is what lets a village kirana store with no refrigeration and no shelving buy and sell a single pack at a time. It is easy to miss if you only look at urban modern retail, but India's food distribution still rests on some 13 million kirana stores.<\/p>\n

With such a low price, profit can only be made through volume. When raw materials like wheat, sugar, and vegetable oil rise, the margin gets squeezed without being able to move the price. In FY2025, operating revenue grew 8.5% while net profit fell 39% from the prior year to \u20b9979.53 crore, a direct reflection of higher raw material costs.<\/p>\n

Britannia leads in biscuit sales by value, but Parle-G is said to be the world's largest by volume (based on a 2011 Nielsen survey; no comparable later survey has been confirmed). It is a market where the ranking changes depending on whether you look at value or volume.<\/p>\n

Points for Japanese companies<\/h2>\n

Competing on price in India's confectionery market isn't realistic. Parle has already claimed the \u20b95 shelf, and there's almost no room for an imported product or a new domestic brand to get in there.<\/p>\n

If there's a way in, it's an area Parle hasn't covered: a product with a texture that doesn't fit an existing category, like a rice cracker; individually wrapped items suited for gifting; or a premium tier that leads with its ingredients or production method. All of these need to be designed to work at \u20b950 or more per pack.<\/p>\n
