BigBasket is an online grocery supermarket established in 2011, and in 2021 the Tata group's Tata Digital took a majority stake. The company grew on next-day delivery, but it is now midway through a switch to quick commerce that delivers in minutes, and the cost of that is badly denting its finances.<\/p>\n

The company that led is now the one chasing<\/h2>\n

BigBasket is the company that first made online grocery work in India. Taking an order and delivering it by the next day, it captured the demand for bulk buying. From 2021, though, Blinkit and Zepto grew on the promise of 10-minute delivery, and what consumers expect of speed changed.<\/p>\n

Next-day delivery can be run efficiently out of large warehouses, while 10-minute delivery only works if you put many small stock points around the city. BigBasket is chasing with an instant delivery service called BB Now, but the warehouse design and the way inventory is held are both different, so the existing setup cannot simply be repurposed. That rebuild is what costs money.<\/p>\n

The weight of the switch shows in the numbers<\/h2>\n

Revenue from the consumer-facing business in FY2026 (the year ended March 2026) was \u20b98,223 crore, up only 7.7% year on year. Set against growth of tens of percent at Blinkit and Instamart over the same period, the slowdown is clear. The loss, meanwhile, widened 66% to \u20b93,073 crore from \u20b91,850 crore the year before.<\/p>\n

Parent company Tata Digital also posted a net loss of \u20b94,974 crore in FY2026, more than 60% of which came from BigBasket. In June 2026, co-founder Hari Menon stepped down as CEO and Amit Nanda, formerly of Amazon India, took his place. The change at the top reads as a statement of intent to switch to a design that puts speed first.<\/p>\n

Points for Japanese companies<\/h2>\n

BigBasket has long sold itself on the breadth of its assortment, so imported food and higher-priced products can still get onto its shelves. The 10-minute delivery platforms narrow down to a few hundred fast-turning items, which leaves little room for niche products. If you are trying Japanese food in the market for the first time, BigBasket is still the more realistic way in.<\/p>\n

The steps for a Japanese manufacturer to get onto these shelves, according to the rough guides published by sales support companies, run in this order: submitting brand materials, negotiating terms, registering product information, being assigned a distribution center, and two to four weeks of test sales, taking 18 to 40 days in all. What is asked for is GST registration, FSSAI approval for food, a track record of 5 to 10 items, and a supply setup that will not run out of stock.<\/p>\n

The company is in the middle of its switch, however, and it may narrow the range of items it carries. Before starting a deal, you need to confirm which service's shelf is being referred to, BigBasket itself or BB Now.<\/p>\n
