Nespresso opens its first Mumbai pavilion at Jio World Drive

This article is based on what we could verify As of August 1, 2026 in public records and news reports from India. India revises its tax rules and regulations frequently, and the details here may have changed since. When making an actual business decision, please check the latest information with primary sources such as the ministries responsible and local experts.

Nespresso Opens Its First Mumbai Store: A Pavilion-Style Outlet at Jio World Drive

Nespresso, the premium coffee brand under Nestlé, opened a pavilion-style store on May 14, 2026 inside Jio World Drive, a commercial complex in Mumbai's Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). It is the brand's third store in India, following Select Citywalk in New Delhi and Ambience Mall in Gurugram, and its first location in West India.

It is operated by Thakral Innovations Pvt. Ltd., which handles sales in India, and it positions itself as an "immersive retail experience" distinct from a conventional cafe.

Features of the pavilion-style store

What's distinctive about the new Mumbai store is that it's branded a "pavilion" rather than the conventional boutique format. It is set within an open atrium, structured to be open to passersby as well.

The store offers "taste counseling" that analyzes an individual's flavor profile. Visitors can talk with dedicated staff to choose capsules and machines suited to their preferences. It is built with a path for experiencing coffee bean origin, roast level, and flavor notes through the five senses, designed to function not merely as a point of sale but as a place of education and discovery.

Why Mumbai: India's premium coffee market

India's premium coffee market keeps growing, driven by rising disposable income in urban areas and an expanding base of consumers seeking "cafe quality at home." Mumbai in particular is India's largest commercial city, and Jio World Drive is a core facility in the BKC area, where affluent residents and expatriates are concentrated.

Nespresso's capsule coffee for the India market runs around 4,500 rupees (about 8,100 yen) for a sleeve of 10 capsules across 5 varieties. The machines themselves start in the low tens of thousands of rupees for entry models, and exceed 30,000 rupees for higher-end models, placing it clearly in the premium tier by Indian standards.

Local media and industry reaction

Indian Retailer magazine assessed that "the choice of an immersive pavilion rather than a cafe format shows Nespresso's commitment to 'premium coffee for the home.'"

Restaurant India, a trade outlet covering India's food service and beverage industry, analyzed the choice of BKC as a location, saying, "By targeting an emerging business district rather than the old town of South Mumbai, the intent to directly capture high-income business people in their 30s and 40s is clear."

Industry sources have also offered the view that "in an India where Starbucks has expanded to more than 300 stores, Nespresso is entering by shifting the axis away from 'cafe versus home.'"

Implications for Japanese Companies

For Japanese coffee-related manufacturers considering entry into India, Nespresso's strategy offers three points of reference.

First is building distribution through a domestic Indian partner, Thakral Innovations. Rather than building logistics and inventory management from scratch in-house, the approach of partnering with a local company that already has a premium appliance distribution network is an effective way to secure reach while keeping initial investment down.

Second is the "lightweight" store format of a mall pavilion. It avoids the risk of setting up a full-size standalone storefront while still securing a venue for the brand experience.

Third is "education-based marketing" aimed at Indian consumers. Counseling that explains coffee's origin and roast can be described as a format that Japanese matcha and Japanese tea brands could also apply when expanding into India.

Trends in India's premium coffee market

In India, Iced coffee demand surges via quick commerce during the hot season, among other trends — the base of coffee consumption is broadening. Indian-born specialty coffee chains such as Blue Tokai and Third Wave Coffee are also growing rapidly, and Starbucks (in partnership with Tata) is aiming for a network of 1,000 stores by 2028.

The capsule coffee market, meanwhile, is still in its early stages, an area where Nespresso's first-mover advantage can readily take hold. Illy and Lavazza also have a limited presence in India, but Nespresso remains the only brand with physical stores.

Conclusion

Nespresso's entry into Mumbai is a move that shows India's premium coffee market expanding beyond cafe dining into in-home consumption as well. The pavilion-style experiential store, TAG Heuer's franchise boutique and Nothing's flagship store, reflects, much like these, the diversification of brand-operated retail in India.

For Japanese coffee equipment makers and tea brands, Nespresso's "education-focused pavilion + local partner" model could serve as a realistic template for cracking the India market.
