Japanese cosmetics major Kose Corporation led the Series C round of Indian D2C skincare brand Foxtale, investing $30 million (about ¥5.1 billion). Kose acquired a 10% stake in Foxtale. Existing investors Panthera Growth Partners, Z47, and Kae Capital also took part in this round.
Kose President Kazutoshi Kobayashi commented, "Foxtale's rapid growth is supported by product development that puts a premium on dialogue with customers, digital marketing, and strong sales capability." The two companies are also considering joint R&D and the establishment of a joint venture.
Foxtale is a D2C skincare brand founded in Mumbai in 2021 by Romita Mazumdar. Under the concept of "effective skincare grounded in modern science," it has built a customer base of over 150,000 across 20 SKUs.

Kose's entry into India dates back to 2013, when it established its local subsidiary, KOSE Corporation India Pvt. Ltd., followed the next year, 2014, by the launch of "Spawake," a skincare brand developed exclusively for the Indian market. Developed to match Indian consumer needs, Spawake has spent 10 years cultivating the local market.
Still, Kose's India business remains a small share of the company's global sales. Kose has set a goal of raising the Global South market's share from its current 3% to 12% by 2030, and the investment in Foxtale is positioned as a core measure toward that goal.

| Round | Timing | Funding raised | Main investors |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-Series A | 2022 | $4 million (about ¥680 million) | Matrix Partners India (now Z47) |
| Series B | 2024 | 119 crore rupees (about ¥2.02 billion) | Panthera Growth Partners |
| Series C | January 2025 | $30 million (about ¥5.1 billion) | Kose (lead), Panthera, Z47, Kae Capital |
Total funds raised have reached a scale of about ¥8 billion, giving it top-tier financial firepower within India's D2C skincare space.
In India's startup industry, one voice after another has praised Kose's investment as "not merely a financial investment, but a full-fledged strategic partnership spanning R&D, manufacturing, and sales."
Inc42 reported that "it's extremely rare for a major Japanese cosmetics company to take a 10% equity stake in an Indian D2C brand, with the establishment of a joint venture even in view." India's BPC (beauty and personal care) market is projected to reach $28 billion (about ¥4.76 trillion) by 2030, with e-commerce accounting for 7% of the overall market.
Foxtale founder Mazumdar said of the partnership with Kose that "the biggest value is being able to optimize Japanese R&D technology for the Indian market." The plan is to incorporate Kose's skincare formulation technology — especially its basic research in moisturizing and whitening — into Foxtale's product line.
Kose's investment in Foxtale points to a "next-generation model" for how Japanese consumer-goods makers should approach the Indian market.

Kose's move isn't an isolated case. In India's BPC market, acquisitions of and investments in D2C brands by major FMCG companies are accelerating. Unilever Ventures, under Unilever, has invested $3 million in Secret Alchemist (clean perfume), extending its reach into India's fragrance D2C market as well.
Among Japanese companies, interest in the Indian market is rising beyond Kose too. Shiseido is already expanding its sales network in India, and there are reports that Kao is also considering a product line dedicated to India. If Kose's "D2C brand investment plus R&D provision" model succeeds, it could become the template for major Japanese beauty companies' India strategy.

Kose's investment in Foxtale serves as a reference "model for entering India's D2C market" for Japanese consumer-goods makers. It's an approach that pursues market penetration through capital participation in a local D2C brand plus technology provision, rather than rolling out a proprietary brand solo.
