Canadian premium athleisure brand Lululemon Athletica has signed a franchise agreement with Tata CLiQ, the e-commerce arm of Tata Group. It will open its first physical store in India in the second half of 2026, while simultaneously launching e-commerce sales on Tata CLiQ Luxury and Tata CLiQ Fashion.
EVP of International André Maestrini commented, "Entering India has been part of our long-term market expansion roadmap. We want to connect with India's communities and support an active lifestyle through both our products and our experiences."

India's athleisure market is estimated at about 13.1 billion dollars as of 2024 and is projected to grow to about 21.2 billion dollars by 2033 (a CAGR of about 5.5%). Yoga, running, and home workouts have taken root, mainly in urban areas, and fitness culture is settling in as a lifestyle.
The price segment above INR 12,000 has so far been dominated almost entirely by Nike and Adidas. Lululemon aims to carve out a distinct position built around "yoga, mindfulness, and community," targeting a gap in the premium tier.
| Brand | Headquarters | Timing of India entry | Features |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nike | United States | 1990s | All-around sports, the largest global market share |
| Adidas | Germany | 1990s | Football and running, No. 2 in the Indian market |
| Puma | Germany | 2006 | Cricket and Bollywood tie-ins, No. 3 in the Indian market |
| Decathlon | France | 2009 | Low-priced multi-sport, No. 1 in Indian sales |
| HRX | India | 2013 | A local brand launched by Hrithik Roshan |

India's fitness community has responded with enthusiasm. Expectations are especially high among yoga instructors, with many saying "a genuine yoga-wear brand is finally coming to India." The hashtag "#LululemonIndia" trended on social media immediately after the announcement.
On the other hand, some have raised concerns about pricing. Lululemon's leggings typically cost around 100 dollars a pair, a high bar for India's middle class. The choice of Tata CLiQ Luxury, a premium e-commerce platform, also suggests a strategy initially targeting the affluent and upper-middle class in Tier 1 cities.
Some retail analysts have offered the analysis that "if the credibility of the Tata brand blends well with Lululemon's community-driven strategy, it could take some share away from Nike and Adidas."
Lululemon's entry into India carries three implications for Japanese apparel and sportswear brands.
As with SK-II's first entry into India, more overseas brands are entering the country in a premium position. This is a moment when Japanese companies, too, should accelerate the selection of Indian partners, centered on differentiation at the higher price tier.
Lululemon's entry could act as a trigger shifting India's athleisure market from "quantity to quality." Growing demand for premium materials and functional fabrics will ripple through the entire textile supply chain.
Apple Store plans for a second store and Tory Burch's entry into Delhi together with these, the rush of overseas premium brands entering India is accelerating in 2026. In fitness and wellness-related sectors, ripple effects are also expected in adjacent businesses such as studio operations, supplements, and smartwatches.

Lululemon's entry into India has the potential to open a crack in the Nike-Adidas duopoly. The key lies in how quickly it can take root in India not merely by selling products but through a "community-based wellness experience."
If Japanese companies are considering entry into India's fitness and apparel market, it is worth watching closely how Lululemon's "partnership with Tata, simultaneous e-commerce launch, and community strategy" plays out. The premium segment of the Indian market is being redrawn right now.
