Fast Retailing's UNIQLO continues to open stores in India's major cities. It opened its 18th store in the country at The Pavillion mall in Pune in western India, and its 3rd store in Bengaluru (its 20th overall in India) at Phoenix Marketcity in the south. Centered on affordable, functional "LifeWear," it is accelerating a strategy of thickening its store network in major cities.
The Pune store is the city's first UNIQLO store, located at The Pavillion mall on Senapati Bapat Road. The sales floor covers 9,213 square feet and carries the full LifeWear collection for men, women, kids, and babies. It is the 18th store overall in India.
In Bengaluru, UNIQLO opened its 3rd store at Phoenix Marketcity mall. The sales floor covers about 21,000 square feet, the largest of any UNIQLO store in the city, and the 20th store overall in India. In addition to the full LifeWear line, it carries fabric technologies AIRism and HEATTECH, and also set up a customization corner for "UTme!," which handles designs by local creators. Works by Bengaluru-based artist Archana Pereira are also on display.
In India, UNIQLO first built out its store network from the Delhi capital region, then expanded to major cities such as Mumbai and Bengaluru. This consecutive opening in Pune and Bengaluru is part of a move to secure major cities in the west and south. Pune has a concentration of IT and manufacturing and many young people with high purchasing power, while Bengaluru, as India's tech hub, has high consumer sensitivity.
Each store incorporates collaborations with local artists and customization features, a design that lets a global brand still absorb local character. It's a way of presenting standardized products within a local context.

Kenji Inoue, CFO and COO of UNIQLO India, said of the Pune opening, "Pune is a vibrant, rapidly growing city, and we're glad to be able to deliver high-quality, functional LifeWear here." Within the apparel industry, a view is spreading that UNIQLO's move toward larger stores and expansion into major regional cities marks a full-fledged phase of share expansion in the Indian market.
Behind the string of openings at large malls is the expansion of India's retail store networks overall. The growth of organized retail, extending even into Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, is widening the room for global brands to open stores. This trend is also Brands making their first entry into India in 2026 connected to broader developments.
UNIQLO is the most accessible precedent for Japanese brands eyeing entry into India. While centering on a standardized product line, it builds in local artist customization and the pitch of functional materials store by store, balancing global and local. It's a useful reference for a design that lets a Japanese brand incorporate local character rather than falling into a one-size-fits-all rollout.
The other is how to choose which cities to open in. The sequence of starting from the Delhi capital region and expanding step by step into Pune and Bengaluru, cities with high purchasing power and consumer sensitivity, can be called a solid expansion model that secures major cities while keeping risk in check. Rather than aiming for a nationwide rollout all at once, the approach of taking territory city by city, starting with the cities you can win, is effective.
UNIQLO's large-format store openings influence malls' tenant-attraction efforts and other apparel companies' store-opening decisions. The presence of a crowd-drawing anchor tenant raises the brand value of the mall as a whole and draws in openings by other brands. India's apparel retail scene is shifting into deep, layered competition, ranging from low-priced Zudio to functionality-focused UNIQLO to overseas fast-fashion players.
In cities like Bengaluru and Pune in particular, flagship and large-format stores of overseas brands are starting to cluster, and consumer choice is expanding all at once. Lululemon's India debut With new entrants like this joining in as well, the axis of competition in the apparel market is shifting to the combined strength of price, functionality, and experience.
UNIQLO's consecutive openings — its first store in Pune and its 3rd store in Bengaluru — made clear an expansion strategy that secures major cities in the west and south. The design of centering on standardized LifeWear while adding local color through local-artist customization aims to reconcile global and local. This orderly rollout, taking territory city by city starting with the cities it can win, is a strong model for Japanese companies considering entering India.
