With a high share of private label, it secures margin on apparel and general merchandise while using food to build visit frequency. Since food is bought weekly, it gives customers a reason to come to the store regularly. The design is to have them browse apparel while they're there.
Where DMart leans toward food and daily necessities, Vishal Mega Mart carries a higher share of apparel. Even within the same hypermarket format, where the profit is made differs.
Consolidated revenue for FY2026 (fiscal year ended March 2026) was ₹12,906 crore, up 20% from ₹10,716 crore in FY2025. As of the end of March 2026 it had 795 stores spread across 535 cities.
Covering 535 cities with 795 stores works out to 1-2 stores per city. Rather than concentrating in big cities, it places one store at a time in smaller cities.
This is a strategy of choosing locations with little competition. Smaller cities have almost no modern retail, with many areas having only independent shops and markets. Opening a single air-conditioned store there changes the shopping options available in that town.
Looking only at the upper tier of urban consumers leads to a misreading of Indian consumption. This company's assortment and prices are an easy indicator to read for what middle- and low-income consumers in regional cities buy and at what price points.
Selling Japanese food to this segment isn't realistic, since the price point doesn't fit. Still, understanding which part of India's overall consumer market falls outside the reach of Japanese products is useful when narrowing down which cities and outlets to target.
