India's leading social commerce platform Meesho launched India's first GenAI-powered voice shopping assistant on March 24, 2026, "Vaani — Your Meesho Dost" More than 1.5 million people used it within a month of launch, and results show a conversion rate 22% higher than regular browsing. "Shopping without being able to type" — a platform with 251 million users has bet on voice AI as its next growth engine.
Vaani means "voice" in an Indian language. Users can simply speak into their smartphone's microphone to complete the entire purchase flow — searching for products, narrowing down options, checking details, reading reviews, and finishing the purchase.
Key features:
The first-month data Meesho published for Vaani demonstrates the potential of voice shopping in hard numbers.
A 22% lift in conversion rate is a number even the advertising industry doesn't easily produce. "Voice conveys intent more accurately than typed text, and reduces hesitation in product selection," the company says in its analysis.
India has a segment often called "the next 500 million users" — consumers in smaller cities and rural areas who own a smartphone but are not comfortable typing in English or Hindi. Meesho is also the platform that grew rapidly by targeting this segment as its primary audience.
India's shopping culture has traditionally been built around spoken negotiation. Customers decide on a purchase through an exchange at the counter — "How much is this?" "Can you go a little lower?" — and Vaani is designed to recreate that real-world shopping experience online.
Meesho is an Indian social commerce platform founded in 2015, with 251 million annual transacting users. It grew rapidly through a "reseller model" in which small business owners — especially women — resell products via social media. It now operates independently as a marketplace, covering a broad range of categories including fashion, everyday goods, and food. Multiple media outlets report that the company has an IPO in view.
What Vaani's success shows is the reality that "UX localization" is what separates success from failure in India's consumer market.
Bringing a Japanese consumer e-commerce experience into India unchanged may simply not work. Voice support in Hindi and regional languages is moving past "nice to have" and toward "won't be used without it."
For companies considering expansion into cities and rural areas beyond Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, a voice UI is one of the most effective channels available.
Vaani sits at the leading edge of consumer-facing GenAI implementation in India. It can serve as a design reference for Japanese companies rolling out AI-powered services in the Indian market.
