India's street corners have chai stalls where a cup costs ₹10 to 20. The bubble milk tea Got Tea serves is reported at anywhere from ₹60 to 300 depending on the source, but either way that is several to more than ten times the price of stall chai. Even for drinks made from the same tea leaves, the buyer and the reason for buying are completely different.
Chai is drunk to quench thirst or out of habit. Tapioca tea is a treat enjoyed for its texture, and also something people photograph in-store. The former can't raise its price, but the latter gets paid for the experience. Its customer base is limited to young urbanites.
It lets customers choose sweetness, ice level, and toppings, selling the ability to customize the order every time. It centers on milk tea and fruit tea bubble teas, alongside coffee and light snacks.
Yu Sung Eo, Armaan Bindra, and Joseph Touthang founded the company in Delhi in 2020, bringing the way of drinking tapioca milk tea from its heartlands, Taiwan and Korea, into Indian cities.
Its founding year, 2020, coincided with the pandemic, a period when dine-in was restricted. It launched on takeaway and delivery, then added stores afterward.
For selling an indulgent beverage in India, this company's positioning can be followed: don't compete with existing cheap drinks, create a different shelf category instead. But that shelf category is limited to cities, and store count doesn't grow easily. Its more than 15 stores show a realistic level five years after founding.
Selling Japanese teas (matcha, hojicha, genmaicha) in India works the same way. They are positioned as an indulgence rather than a substitute for chai. Unless you first decide whether to serve them in a store or sell leaf tea online, you cannot settle on price or pack size.
