The Italian bag and travel goods brand Carpisa (operated by Kuvera S.p.A. of Naples) has made its first entry into India through a long-term licensing agreement with the local company Neopolis Brands. The first store opened in Whitefield, eastern Bengaluru, at Phoenix Marketcity, a flagship store of about approximately 2,500 square feet in size, centered on trolley cases and travel bags, aiming to expand to more than 100 stores across India.
Carpisa's entry into India goes beyond opening a single store. In addition to a street-facing flagship at Phoenix Marketcity, it is simultaneously running a shop-in-shop at Shoppers Stop (including its Bannerghatta store) and a pop-up at Brigade Orion Mall (Rajajinagar). It is also selling through e-commerce marketplaces such as Myntra, Nykaa, and Tata CLiQ, as well as its own website, positioning itself to hold multiple touchpoints from day one of launch.
The reason for basing its entry point in Bengaluru, South India's IT hub city, appears to be its thick layer of consumers with high disposable income and strong demand for business and leisure travel. Carpisa plans to open 3 to 4 stores in Bengaluru alone within the year, taking a classic local-conquest store-opening strategy of first building density in one city before expanding to major cities.
For a Japanese brand in the travel goods category targeting India, Carpisa's model — licensing to a local partner while simultaneously standing up three layers at once: a mall flagship, a department store shop-in-shop, and major e-commerce — offers a useful reference. Rather than starting with a single directly-run store, it is a design that grabs broad coverage from the start to rapidly boost awareness and trial opportunities.
