Cake by VPBank, a leading digital-only bank in Vietnam, began general availability at the end of March 2026 of a new service that lets users receive international remittances from overseas in real time, called "Cake GlobalX". Combining Visa's international payment network with Cake's AI infrastructure, the service directly addresses the "delayed overseas payments and hidden fees" problems faced by freelancers, content creators, and cross-border e-commerce sellers in Vietnam, and it is drawing attention as a result.
Cake GlobalX is an international remittance receipt service that supports up to 10 currencies, including the US dollar (USD), Canadian dollar (CAD), British pound (GBP), and euro (EUR). Fees start at $1.10 (about 170 yen) per remittance, a low level, and registration through account opening is said to be completed within "a few minutes."
Until now, Vietnamese freelancers and cross-border e-commerce sellers have faced a 3-to-7-day delay and an opaque fee structure when receiving payment from overseas. Cake GlobalX resolves this by providing a highly transparent system where users can check the status of a remittance in the app at any time, 24 hours a day.
Cake CEO Nguyen Huu Quang commented, "This initiative is a strategic step toward expansion across all of Southeast Asia," suggesting the service will extend beyond Vietnam alone.
Since its founding in 2019, Cake by VPBank has built its profile as one of the fastest-growing digital banks in Vietnam. Its key metrics as of the end of 2025 are as follows.
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Customers | 6.2 million |
| Monthly credit applications | Over 1 million |
| Total transaction value | $12.8 billion (approximately 1.92 trillion yen) |
| Revenue growth rate, January-September 2025 | Up 225% year over year |
| Customer retention rate (frequent users) | Approximately 80% |
| Customer retention rate (financial service users) | Approximately 95% |
Revenue for the first nine months of 2025 grew 225% year over year, while the increase in operating expenses was held to 83%. The fact that cost efficiency is improving even during a rapid growth phase is a metric that particularly catches the eye of financial institutions.
Behind Cake's rapid growth is a brand strategy that set Vietnam's roughly 25 million Gen Zers (aged 25 and under) as its primary target. A gamified UX, zero-fee accounts, and personalized benefit notifications have won it support among young people.
On the technology side, the bank runs more than 100 in-house AI models and has automated more than 700 processes, from identity verification and chat support to credit screening and debt collection. It is also developing its own Vietnamese-language LLM (large language model), work that has led to a research presentation at the international conference Interspeech 2025. The bank has further, as the first digital-only bank in Southeast Asia, deployed facial recognition security that meets international fintech certification standards as part of its infrastructure.
Behind the emergence of Cake GlobalX lies the rapid expansion of Vietnam's digital payment market. Vietnam's mobile payment market size in 2026 is projected to reach $52.1 billion, and the shift from cash to digital payments is progressing at a pace fast enough to be described as "exponential" rather than "gradual."
Non-cash payments recorded an increase of more than 60% versus 2024, and mobile payment transaction volume expanded 70-75% year over year. 56% of Vietnamese consumers said they carry less cash than they did a year ago, and the spread of cashless payments shows up vividly in the numbers.
Vietnam's e-commerce market is projected to reach approximately $33.6 billion in 2026, and digital banks' presence is growing across every consumer touchpoint, including e-commerce payments, food delivery payments, and receiving freelance income.
The market segment where Cake GlobalX resonates most strongly is Vietnam's "cross-border freelancers and content-economy workers." In Vietnam, the number of IT freelancers using crowdsourcing platforms such as Upwork and Fiverr, YouTube and TikTok content creators, and cross-border e-commerce sellers operating via Shopify and Amazon is growing rapidly.
Their common pain point has been "receiving payment from overseas quickly and converting it into Vietnamese dong." Conventional international remittance services often took several days to complete and had opaque intermediary fees. Cake GlobalX directly addresses this pain point, winning particularly strong support from digitally native young business owners such as beauty creators active on TikTok Shop, among others.
When Japanese companies make use of Vietnamese freelance talent (for cross-border development, content production, and the like), the spread of same-day receipt tools like Cake GlobalX makes it easier to avoid losing partners due to payment delays. In transactions with Vietnamese freelancers, adding Cake compatibility as a payment option will likely help build smoother relationships.
Cake's success embodies a new design philosophy of "finance as a lifestyle brand" that goes beyond a mere banking app. In Japan too, services such as PayPay and d Barai have in recent years locked in users around "points economic zones," but Cake's combination of gamification and AI personalization is a useful reference case for services targeting younger generations.
When Japanese brands enter Vietnam's e-commerce market (Shopee, Lazada, TikTok Shop), same-day settlement through a digital bank like Cake GlobalX could potentially be used to pay commissions to local agents and sales partners. Japanese brands' presence is also growing in Vietnam's skincare market, and amid that trend, building smooth financial relationships with local partners is an important foundation for brand expansion.
The emergence of Cake GlobalX is more than just the announcement of a new fintech feature. It symbolizes the moment when Vietnamese consumers, creators, and digital businesses gained "frictionless financial infrastructure" for economic activity with the rest of the world.
With Cake, which has a base of 6.2 million users and $12.8 billion in transactions, now beginning to offer the new value of cross-border settlement, Vietnam's digital economy has entered a new stage. In a Vietnam where Gen Z is becoming the central economic player, Cake's moves will likely serve as an important indicator for reading future trends in digital consumption.
