Grab rolls out 13 AI features at once at its annual event 'GrabX 2026.' Grab AI Assistant and Driver AI Assistant to expand across Southeast Asia

Grab, Southeast Asia's largest super app, announced the simultaneous rollout of 13 AI-powered features at its annual product launch event 'GrabX 2026,' held in Indonesia on April 8, 2026. CEO Anthony Tan commented that the goal is 'to reduce the daily mental load of people living in Southeast Asia,' and outlined a policy of implementing AI across all three groups: consumers, drivers, and merchants.

Grab has been competing for the top spot in Southeast Asia's ride-hailing and food delivery market by monthly active users in Vietnam, but it was recently overtaken by ShopeeFood in food delivery share in Q1 2026. The 13 new features are positioned as a core measure to reclaim market share in Vietnam.

Overview of the 13 AI features

The 13 features fall into three categories: 6 for consumers, 3 for travel, and 4 for merchants and drivers. At the core are the consumer-facing 'Grab AI Assistant' and the driver-facing 'Driver AI Assistant,' both LLM-based assistants that support voice and text.

The spotlight is on Grab AI Assistant and Group Ride

When a user makes a request in natural language, such as 'book a Korean restaurant for four people on Friday night' or 'arrange an airport pickup for tomorrow morning,' Grab AI Assistant handles everything end-to-end within the Grab app, from restaurant reservations to ride bookings and payment. What's new is that it brings an experience similar to Japan's LINE or Instagram DMs onto a super app.

Group Ride is a feature in which AI matches users heading in the same direction for a shared ride, cutting fares by up to 40%. While this lowers the per-ride unit price in the ride-hailing market, it is also a measure for Grab to raise driver earnings efficiency per ride. Driver AI Assistant is a tool that lets drivers ask about in-app policies and income optimization by voice, aimed at improving driver retention in areas with lower literacy rates.

For merchants: Virtual Store Manager and Cloud Printer

The highlight for merchants is Virtual Store Manager, which analyzes CCTV footage with image-recognition AI to automate anomaly detection in -store operations, queue management, and out-of-stock alerts. It covers not only GrabFood merchants but also retail partners on GrabMart (its daily goods e-commerce service).

Cloud Printer consolidates orders coming in from multiple channels, GrabFood, ShopeeFood, and a merchant's own online ordering, into a single kitchen printer via the cloud. For small F&B outlets in Ho Chi Minh City, this is a practical feature that eliminates the hassle of operating multiple tablets.

Rollout regions and timeline

Grab operates in six Southeast Asian countries (Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam), and the 13 features will be released progressively. In this region, used by more than 200 million air travelers a year, Grab AI Assistant and Personalised Travel Experience appear set to be introduced first. In Vietnam, a phased rollout is expected in Q2-Q3 2026.

The competitive landscape in the Vietnamese market

In Vietnam's food delivery market in Q1 2026, ShopeeFood held a 42.94% share and GrabFood 40.61%, with ShopeeFood slightly in the lead. Grab held the top spot through 2025, but has been squeezed by Shopee's super app ecosystem and its integration with ShopeeXpress logistics. For more detail, see the article ShopeeFood vs. GrabFood: the super app war which explains this in more depth.

The rollout of 13 AI features can be read as a strategy to fight back through feature differentiation, by implementing at once the 'LLM-based concierge function' and 'CCTV-linked store management,' capabilities that ShopeeFood does not yet have. Circle Asia x Visa x Pismo's AI PayLater and other moves in Vietnam's payments-AI space, running in parallel, will also support Grab's GrabPay and Cash Loan features.

Implications for Japanese players

Japanese food and beverage brands listed on GrabFood in Vietnam can lower multi-channel operating and in-store operations costs by adopting Cloud Printer and Virtual Store Manager. On the other hand, as Grab AI Assistant becomes widespread, users will search less often by restaurant name directly, and whether a brand ranks highly in AI recommendations will become a marketing KPI. The concept of 'Grab AI ASO (Answer Search Optimization)' will become necessary.

Points to watch going forward

  • Grab AI Assistant's recommendation logic (ad placements and pricing structure)
  • Breakdown of driver earnings under Group Ride (whether it can offset the fare decline)
  • The scope of Virtual Store Manager's CCTV analysis (handling of personal data, GDPR/PDPD compliance)
  • Timing of ShopeeFood's competing AI feature announcements
  • The specific launch timing in the Vietnamese market and local-language support (Vietnamese LLM performance)
