The AI assistant "Kiki Info," built into "Zalo," the messaging app run by Vietnam's largest tech company VNG Corporation, has surpassed 1 million users one year after launch. Kiki Info is a chatbot-style mini app embedded within Zalo, usable instantly without any additional install or account registration. It handled about 500,000 questions in its first week and reached a cumulative 1 million users after 12 months.
At the same time, VNG also announced that its in-car voice assistant "Kiki Auto" has reached a cumulative 1.5 million users. According to a survey conducted by market research firm Q&Me in March 2026, about 20% of Zalo users use Zalo's AI features at least once a week, showing that the company's Vietnamese-focused local LLM strategy has achieved a certain level of penetration.
| Item | Description |
|---|---|
| Delivery Format | A mini app inside the Zalo app |
| Registration | Zalo login only (no additional install or registration) |
| Key functions | Q&A, and guidance on daily life, social information, and administrative procedures |
| After 1 Week | About 500,000 questions processed |
| After 12 Months | Surpassed a cumulative 1 million users |
| Language | Vietnamese (strong at understanding regional dialects) |
| Specialized Feature | Digital Citizen Assistant (guidance for online procedures for citizen ID card and passport applications) |
Kiki Info's distinguishing feature is its high comprehension of dialects from northern, central, and southern Vietnam. It responds naturally not only to standard Vietnamese but also to questions containing regional accents and colloquial expressions. It has a strength in "Vietnam-specific context, social systems, and administrative procedures" that general-purpose LLMs (such as ChatGPT and Gemini) tend to struggle with. Its Digital Citizen Assistant feature guides users by voice or text through online procedures such as renewing a Căn cước công dân (CCCD: citizen ID card) or issuing an e-Passport.
Kiki Auto, which debuted in December 2020, was Vietnam's first in-car voice assistant, operating natively in Vietnamese as an alternative to Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Against a backdrop of frustration with Google Assistant's and Siri's mixed English-Vietnamese recognition, it has won support from Vietnamese drivers and reached 1.5 million users.
It handles hands-free Vietnamese-language commands while driving, such as "guide me to the nearest gas station," "call so-and-so on Zalo," and "tomorrow's weather." Through partnerships with local automakers such as VinFast and third-party in-car device manufacturers, the pattern of factory-installed adoption in new vehicles is expanding.
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Zalo's Domestic Usage Rate | About 85% of Vietnam's population |
| Weekly Usage Rate of AI Features Within Zalo | About 20% |
| Kiki Info Users | 1 million (one year after launch) |
| Kiki Auto Users | 1.5 million (cumulative) |
| Survey Conducted By | Q&Me (Asia Plus Inc.) |
| Survey Timing | March 2026 |
Taking Vietnam's adult population to be about 70 million, an 85% usage rate implies about 60 million Zalo users, and if 20% of them use AI features weekly, that works out to roughly 12 million people having an AI touchpoint through Zalo. The 1 million Kiki Info users represent less than 10% of that figure. AI features overall (translation, summarization, image generation, chatbots, etc.) exist beyond Kiki Info as well, and Kiki Info is a "Q&A-focused" subset of them.
VNG continues to develop its own Vietnamese-language LLM in-house at Zalo AI Lab (formerly Zalo Group AI), differentiating itself from international general-purpose LLMs such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude through "Vietnamese-language nativeness," "understanding of Vietnamese society, administration, and culture," and "data sovereignty (no offshore data transmission)." The 20% AI feature usage rate found in the Q&Me survey shows that local AI via Zalo already commands reach on par with, or beyond, ChatGPT's estimated monthly active users in Vietnam (estimated in the millions).
As a related development, Ho Chi Minh City has the public-private VC fund "HCM VIF" has been launched, and VNG is one of its LPs. The expansion of AI and semiconductor startup investment in Vietnam lays the groundwork to accelerate the development of AI features succeeding Kiki Info and Kiki Auto. It has also entered a competitive relationship, in the Vietnamese-language AI assistant space, with the 13 features of GrabX 2026 announced by Grab.
Japanese companies with a Zalo Official Account (ZOA) in Vietnam — megabanks, retailers, automakers, convenience stores, and others — can now design automated responses to user inquiries in cooperation with Kiki Info. Voice or text questions such as "tell me on Zalo where the nearest ATM for XX Bank is" or "show me the nearest XX convenience store" can now reach the brand through Kiki.
That said, Kiki Info's recommendation logic has not been disclosed, and optimizing for Kiki in an SEO-like sense is still at a trial-and-error stage. For Japanese companies, the starting point is connecting to the Zalo Mini App API and preparing structured data (JSON-LD, FAQ markup) so that their own information can be correctly read within Zalo's AI features.
